In need of a network system that keeps track of countdown times, Nidec come to DC-Digital for a solution. This custom DC-40T-DN-UP-STATIC countdown timer system is a fully wired, RS-485–based solution designed for real-time process visibility, data collection, and remote monitoring in industrial and manufacturing environments. Each timer in the system operates independently while simultaneously contributing data back to a centralized computer through a structured RS-485 communication network.

The system supports multiple countdown timers, each capable of being set up to 99 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds. In this demonstration, two timers are shown, designated as Timer A and Timer B. While each timer functions independently with its own Start/Stop and Reset controls, all timing data is continuously gathered and transmitted back to a terminal program on a connected computer. This allows operators, supervisors, and management to view live timer values and accumulated process data from a remote location.

Each timer retains its programmed set value indefinitely. Once a countdown value is entered, it is stored in non-volatile memory and is not affected by power loss. Even after a shutdown or outage, the timer resumes with the same programmed start value unless it is intentionally changed. This makes the system highly reliable for long-term production tracking and downtime analysis.

When a countdown reaches zero, the timer does not stop. Instead, it transitions into a negative count and begins counting upward. This allows the system to track overtime or extended delays, displaying negative time locally up to 9 hours and 59 minutes. Meanwhile, the data transmitted back to the computer continues to track elapsed negative time up to 99 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds, providing a complete record of process overruns for reporting and analysis.

Communication between timers is handled through RS-485 in a daisy-chain configuration. Each timer has an RS-485 input acting as a slave and an RS-485 output acting as a master. Data flows from one timer to the next, and the final timer in the chain sends all accumulated data back to the computer. The system updates once per second, ensuring accurate, real-time feedback across all connected timers.

Programming and monitoring are performed using a standard terminal program, which can be obtained at no cost. The system operates at 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit. Commands are sent from the computer to address specific timers by channel designation, allowing operators to set or update values for any timer on the network.
