The DC-256T-UP-C-TERM-DRIVE-THRU Fast Food Customer Counter Up-Timer is a custom-built solution designed specifically for high-volume drive-through environments like Chick-fil-A. This order was engineered to help streamline customer flow, monitor service efficiency, and provide a clear visual representation of both customer count and wait time at the pickup window.
In fast food operations, speed and accuracy are critical. This system allows the customer to accomplish two primary objectives simultaneously:
- Count the total number of vehicles placing and picking up orders.
- Track how long each customer is waiting at the drive-through window.
The result is a clear, real-time performance metric that supports operational efficiency, team accountability, and customer satisfaction.
The functionality is simple, reliable, and fully automated through pneumatic activation. As a vehicle approaches the pickup window, it drives over the first pneumatic air hose positioned on the ground. When the car compresses the hose, air pressure is sent to the pneumatic switch inside the master enclosure. This action does two things instantly:
- It increments the green LED customer counter by one digit.
- It starts the red LED up-timer, which begins counting upward in seconds.
At this moment, the up-timer is actively measuring how long that specific vehicle is waiting at the pickup window. The timer continues counting upward, providing a visible indication of service duration. Once the up-timer reaches 20 seconds, the LED display begins flashing, signaling that the service time has reached a preset threshold. This visual cue encourages efficient vehicle movement and helps maintain drive-through flow.
After the order is handed off and the vehicle departs, it rolls over the second pneumatic air hose positioned past the window. This triggers the second pneumatic switch, which immediately stops the up-timer. The cycle is then ready to repeat for the next customer.
Each new vehicle crossing the first hose:
- Resets the up-timer back to zero.
- Starts the timer counting upward again.
- Increments the green customer counter to the next number.
This continuous cycle ensures accurate tracking of every drive-through transaction without requiring manual intervention.
In addition to pneumatic automation, the master enclosure includes push-button controls for full manual operation. Operators can:
- Stop the timer.
- Reset the up-timer to zero.
- Reset the customer counter back to zero.
This allows management to clear totals at the beginning of a shift or at any designated reporting period.
From a hardware standpoint, the DC-256T-UP-C-TERM-DRIVE-THRU is built for durability and visibility in demanding environments. Key physical features include:
- Tough extruded aluminum enclosure
- Black powder-coated finish for long-term durability
- 2.3-inch high-intensity LED digits
- Visibility up to 120 feet
- Six-digit configuration
The display layout is structured for clarity:
- First two digits (red): Up-timer counting from 00 to 99 seconds
- Remaining four digits (green): Customer counter counting up to 9999
Power is supplied through a standard three-prong power cord with 6 feet of cabling, making installation straightforward.
The pneumatic activation system includes:
- Two industrial pneumatic switches
- 20-foot air hoses
- Air compression activation triggered by vehicle weight
As a vehicle drives over the air hose, air pressure is compressed and transmitted directly into the switch, activating the timer and counter functions within the enclosures. This method eliminates the need for complex sensors and provides a reliable, maintenance-friendly triggering solution.
Overall, this custom unit provides Chick-fil-A with a practical and highly visible tool to monitor throughput, manage service time expectations, and maintain drive-through efficiency. The DC-256T-UP-C-TERM-DRIVE-THRU is a straightforward yet powerful performance display system that reinforces speed-of-service goals while delivering measurable data in real time.
