RS-232 / RS-485 multi-functional display designed for flexible system integration and long-distance serial communication. This custom order configuration delivers count up, count down, timer up, timer down, static number display, and time-of-day clock functionality—all within a single industrial display platform. Built for adaptability, it can be ordered with RS-232, RS-485 (45), or both, depending on system requirements.

This specific unit was prepared to be integrated into a larger system at a later stage, so it was equipped with a repeating output configuration. Upon power-up, the display immediately begins transmitting its default code string (TS000000000000), indicating a static display state with all zeros shown on the screen. The system not only receives serial commands but can also resend 485 data outward when that option is selected. This repeating output feature must be specified at the time of order; standard website configurations provide a single input unless otherwise requested.

Connection flexibility is a core part of the design. The modular cabling system allows the back box to be mounted cleanly to a wall with detachable connectors for easier installation and servicing. Terminal blocks provide secure connections for:

  • RS-485 transmit (TX)
  • RS-485 receive (RX)
  • Power input (standard 12V, optional 24V available upon request)

When configuring communication, it is important to consider transmission distance. RS-232 is typically effective up to approximately 30 feet, while RS-485 supports distances up to roughly 2,500 feet. For extended runs or industrial environments, RS-485 is recommended. In this demonstration setup, a USB-to-RS-232 converter feeds into an RS-485 driver to transmit proper 485 signal levels to the display.

No proprietary software is required for operation. The display communicates using a straightforward serial data protocol and works with free terminal programs such as Teramite. After selecting the correct serial port on your computer, commands can be sent directly to control the display functions. All commands must be entered in uppercase format.

Current available command modes include:

  • TC – Time of Day Clock
  • TU – Timer Up
  • TD – Timer Down
  • TS – Static Number Display

For example, initiating a Timer Up sequence involves sending the appropriate TU command string, defining start parameters, and optionally assigning broadcast channels. The display supports addressable communication, allowing grouped or targeted messaging. Broadcast channels A through Z can be used for segmented control, while a wildcard (*) can be appended to transmit a command to all connected displays simultaneously.

Once a Timer Up command is sent, the display immediately enters count-up mode. A decimal indicator confirms timer operation, and the colon separator provides a clear minute-and-second format. During operation, the system can also rebroadcast the timer data over RS-485 when that option is enabled. Pause and resume functions are controlled by additional TU command variations, allowing full runtime control without interrupting system communication.

Beyond timer functionality, the display supports:

  • Countdown timer control
  • Static numeric presentation for production metrics or targets
  • Real-time time-of-day clock display
  • Addressable multi-display broadcast grouping
  • Optional 485 repeating output for system expansion

This configuration makes the display ideal for manufacturing floors, process monitoring, synchronized system timing, production tracking, and facility-wide visual communication. With modular wiring, scalable communication options, and an expanding command library that continues to grow as new application requests are implemented, this platform delivers a robust and adaptable serial display solution.
