Morgan Foods of Austin, Indiana, selected the DC-80T-DN-W large countdown timer to provide a highly visible way to monitor product changeover times on a food production assembly line. Because the timer needed to operate in a wet production environment while remaining easy for production personnel to read from throughout the work area, the unit combines an IP-66-rated outdoor enclosure with large 8-inch red LED digits and a viewing distance of up to 400 feet.

Morgan Foods processes food products for major grocery retailers including Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Aldi, making efficient production changeovers an important part of its manufacturing operation. The DC-80T-DN-W was configured to give employees a clear indication of how much time remained during each changeover while also providing an indication of how long the process continued after the allotted time had expired.

The four-digit timer can be programmed to count down from as much as 99 hours and provides precise time measurement down to hundredths of a second. For the production line application, the timer counts down toward zero as the changeover progresses. When the countdown reaches 00:00, the display begins flashing to provide an immediate visual indication that the allotted changeover period has ended. The unit can also be configured to begin counting upward after reaching zero, allowing production personnel to see the total amount of overage time that has elapsed.

This combination of countdown and count-up operation allows the DC-80T-DN-W to serve as both a changeover timer and an overtime indicator. Instead of requiring employees to calculate how much time has passed after a scheduled changeover period, the display provides that information directly.

The DC-80T-DN-W uses a LoRa RF wireless remote control operating in the 902–928 MHz range. Its wireless control system provides more than 1,500 feet of range outdoors and more than 300 feet indoors, giving operators flexibility when controlling a large display from different locations around the production area. The remote provides functions for starting and stopping the timer, resetting it to the last programmed value or zero, and setting the hours, minutes, and seconds.

For a food processing environment, the enclosure was an important part of the application. The timer uses a tough, fingerprint-resistant, black powder-coated aluminum enclosure rated IP-66 for outdoor and wet-location use. Measuring 25 inches wide by 11-1/8 inches tall and 3-1/4 inches deep, the display provides a substantial viewing area without requiring an excessively large enclosure.

The four 8-inch digits are constructed from individual 5 mm oval, sunlight-resistant red LEDs with a 110-degree by 40-degree viewing angle. This allows the remaining changeover time to remain visible across a large production area, helping employees monitor the process without needing to stand directly beside the timer.
