A customer ordered a DC-Digital DC-40T-UP-TERM large digital LED count-up timer configured for automatic operation with a diffused reflective sensor. The combination provides a simple way to measure and display the amount of time an object remains within a monitored area without requiring an operator to manually start and stop the timer.

The DC-40T-UP-TERM is designed to count elapsed time from hundredths of a second through 99 hours using Shift Digit Technology. With four-inch, super-bright red LED digits, the elapsed time can be viewed from distances of up to 200 feet, making the timer suitable for applications where the display needs to remain clearly visible from across a work area.

For this application, the timer is controlled by a diffused reflective sensor. The sensor detects when an object is present and provides a PNP output to the timer. While the object remains detected, the PNP signal keeps the timer operating. When the object passes out of the sensor’s detection range, the PNP output is removed and the timer stops, leaving the accumulated elapsed time displayed.

This automatic start-and-stop operation allows the DC-40T-UP-TERM to track the duration of an event based directly on the presence of an object. Rather than requiring an operator to monitor the process and manually control the timer, the sensor provides the input that determines when timing begins and ends.

The timer retains the accumulated time until a reset command is provided. Resetting can be performed locally or through an external control input, allowing the timer to be returned to zero before the next timing cycle. This makes the system useful for repetitive processes where elapsed time needs to be measured, displayed, recorded, and then reset for another cycle.

The DC-40T-UP-TERM provides three external control terminals for flexible integration into an automated timing system. Terminal 1 provides Start/Pause control, Terminal 2 resets the display to zero, and Terminal 3 resets the timer to zero and immediately starts a new timing cycle. Each terminal can accept a momentary contact closure or PNP 5–30 VDC input, with optional NPN control also available.

The sensor-controlled configuration is particularly useful when timing needs to correspond directly to an object’s movement or presence. When the sensor detects the object, the timer can begin accumulating elapsed time. When the object leaves the detection area, the timer stops at the measured duration. The displayed value therefore provides an immediate visual indication of how long the monitored condition lasted.

The four-inch red LED display and 200-foot viewing distance allow the elapsed time to be visible throughout a larger production, testing, processing, or work area. The timer’s 14-gauge aluminum enclosure with fingerprint-resistant black powder coating provides a durable housing for the electronic display and control circuitry. NEMA 4X polycarbonate and aluminum IP66 enclosure options are also available for applications requiring additional environmental protection.

The DC-40T-UP-TERM measures approximately 16-1/4 inches wide by 6-3/4 inches tall by 3 inches deep. Standard mounting accommodates a 4 x 4 or 2 x 4 electrical rough-in box with a slotted teardrop knockout, while handle and tripod mounting options are available for applications requiring alternate installation methods.

Power is supplied by the included PS-12-700 120–240 VAC wall adapter with a six-foot cord, while the timer can also accept customer-supplied 24 VDC power at 500 mA through the terminal block connection when applicable.

By combining the DC-40T-UP-TERM with a diffused reflective sensor, the customer receives an automated elapsed-time display that responds directly to the presence and movement of an object. The system provides a clear, highly visible count-up display while allowing the timing process to be controlled automatically through the sensor and reset for repeated use.
