Sea Otter Exhibit Timer

Did you know that an otter can hold it’s breath for nearly five minutes at a time? Neither did I, but it is true. I didn’t find this out until the exhibits department from The Bronx Zoo contacted Dc-Digital to develop a specific type of timer for their sea otter exhibit. Sea otters are marine mammals but they live in coastal areas because they like to live where it is no deeper than 30 meters. They feed off the bottom of the ocean, so they have to do their hunting and diving in one breath. The Bronx zoo was in search of an interactive timer in which zoo visitors could time the otters and then time themselves on how log they could hold their breath. So how does it work? You simply hold the start button in until you are done holding your breath, at which time you would release the start button.

The  timer that DC-Digital produced for The Bronx Zoo was a DC-25 up timer. It has a single push button to start and stop. It has four 2.3 inch red LED digits that are readable up to 120 feet indoors. When someone pushes the start button, the timer begins counting up. When the start button is released, the time stops and final time is displayed for four seconds. The timer then resets at zero.
