This custom DC-40UTW-Andon-Master-W and DC-10-W-Secondary Multi-Function Timer System was built specifically for the City of Springfield, Ohio, a government facility located in northern Ohio, and is designed to support structured, time-managed public meetings. In this application, the system functions as a highly visible speaker and meeting timer for City Commissioners, ensuring that both speakers and attendees are clearly informed as allotted time is approaching its end. By combining time of day display, count up, and count down functionality with visual Andon alerts, this solution promotes orderly, efficient, and transparent meeting flow.
The system operates using a Master and Secondary enclosure configuration, with both units fully redundant to one another. Any action performed on the Master enclosure is immediately mirrored on the Secondary enclosure, ensuring consistent timing information throughout the room. Control of the system is handled wirelessly using the WRCT-8 Controller, which allows operators to switch between time of day, count up, and count down modes, as well as start, stop, reset, and configure timing thresholds without needing to access the enclosures directly.
During meetings, operators can easily switch the display to Count Up mode, which is ideal for tracking speaker duration in real time. Once activated using the Start/Stop function, the timer increments continuously in hundredths of a second, counting up to a maximum of 99 hours. While the timer is actively running, users can switch between views—including time of day or countdown—without interrupting the timing operation. A flashing indicator dot clearly communicates that the timer is still active, regardless of the current display mode.
For stricter time control, the Count Down function provides advanced visual alert capabilities that are particularly effective in public meeting environments. Operators can set hours, minutes, and seconds directly from the WRCT-8 controller, then configure visual warning thresholds using the integrated Andon light system. This allows the meeting facilitator to alert speakers before time expires and clearly indicate when time has fully elapsed.
Key countdown alert behavior includes:
- A yellow flashing Andon light to warn speakers that their remaining time is approaching a preset threshold
- A red flashing Andon light when the countdown reaches zero, clearly signaling that the allotted time has ended
- Immediate reset and recall of the last programmed value for rapid reuse between speakers
This visual approach ensures time awareness without disrupting proceedings, reducing the need for verbal interruptions while maintaining fairness and structure.
From a hardware standpoint, both the Master and Secondary enclosures are built for long-term reliability in professional and government environments. Each unit features a tough aluminum enclosure with a black powder-coated finish that is fingerprint resistant and dust resistant. The Master enclosure uses a 4-inch digit display that is readable from distances of up to 200 feet, making it ideal for large meeting rooms or council chambers. The Secondary enclosure features 1-inch digits with a 25-foot viewing range, providing localized visibility for presenters or staff.
Hardware and system highlights include:
- Four-digit displays capable of counting up or down to 99 hours in hundredths of a second
- Time of day display in 12-hour or 24-hour format
- 120–240 VAC power wall adapter with a 6.5-foot cord
- Mounting support via 4×4 or 2×4 electrical rough-in boxes with slotted teardrop mounting points
- WRCT-8 wireless RF remote controller with eight dedicated function buttons and a range of up to 1,500 feet outdoors and 300 feet indoors
- Integrated Andon light accessory capable of displaying multiple colors, configured on this system to flash yellow and red for meeting time alerts
Together, the DC-40UTW-Andon-Master-W and DC-10-W-Secondary Multi-Function Timer System provide the City of Springfield with a reliable, easy-to-use, and highly visible timing solution that enhances meeting efficiency, speaker awareness, and overall professionalism in public sessions.
