This custom DC 40T-UP-PKG-Oil-Change Up-Timer was built specifically for McMaster-Carr to provide a clear, automated way to track oil change duration in an automotive service environment. Designed for simplicity and accuracy, this model visually displays how long a vehicle has been in an oil change cycle, allowing technicians and shop managers to monitor performance, efficiency, and consistency without manual input or complicated controls.

At the core of this system is a long-range photo-reflective area sensor that automatically controls the timing process. When an object is detected in front of the sensor, the up-timer begins incrementing in real time, counting upward in hundredths of a second. This allows workers to accurately measure how long an oil change takes from start to finish. Once the object is removed, the timer immediately stops, holding the final elapsed time for review. When the object is reintroduced, the timer resets to zero and starts counting again, making it ideal for repetitive service tasks throughout the day.

This automated operation removes guesswork and manual resets, ensuring consistent timing across multiple vehicles and technicians. The DC 40T-UP-PKG-Oil-Change model can count from hundredths of a second all the way up to 99 hours and 59 minutes using shift digit technology, providing flexibility for both short service tasks and longer maintenance intervals. The four-digit, 4-inch display is highly visible and readable from up to 200 feet away, making it suitable for busy shop floors where quick visual confirmation is essential.

From a hardware standpoint, this model is built to withstand industrial and automotive environments. The enclosure is constructed from durable 14-gauge aluminum and finished with a fingerprint-resistant black powder-coated casing. Measuring 16 inches wide, 6 inches tall, and 3 inches deep, the enclosure offers a compact yet robust footprint that protects internal components while maintaining a professional appearance.

Power is supplied through a 120 to 240 VAC wall connection using a 6-foot power cord, with internal power management provided by a 12-volt battery charger. Mounting flexibility is supported through a slotted teardrop knockout designed for standard 4×4 or 2×4 electrical rough-in boxes, allowing for clean and secure installation in a variety of shop layouts.

Key functional highlights of the DC 40T-UP-PKG-Oil-Change Up-Timer include:

  • Automatic start, stop, and reset operation using a photo-reflective area sensor
  • Real-time up-counting in hundredths of a second
  • Maximum count capability up to 99 hours and 59 minutes
  • Four-digit display with long-distance visibility up to 200 feet
  • Durable, industrial-grade aluminum enclosure with powder-coated finish

Accessory support for this model includes a long-range photo-reflective area sensor with a 25-foot pigtail. The sensor is internally connected via a terminal block using 22-gauge wiring, ensuring a secure and reliable connection while keeping external wiring clean and organized.

Overall, the DC 40T-UP-PKG-Oil-Change Up-Timer delivers a straightforward, automated solution for tracking oil change duration. By combining sensor-driven operation, high-visibility display technology, and rugged construction, this custom unit helps automotive service teams improve efficiency, maintain consistency, and gain valuable insight into service timing without adding complexity to their workflow.
