Chugach Electric Association has reached out to DC-Digital for a way to display their Arbiter Master Clock. This is one a new model in DC-Digital’s workshop. The DC-406-VLFD Serial Data Transmission Controlled Display is a large-format visualization solution designed to extend the visibility of critical timing and frequency data generated by Arbiter master clock systems. Built for environments where precise monitoring is essential but the source equipment is not easily viewable, this display transforms compact serial data into a clear, readable format that can be observed from significant distances without compromising accuracy or synchronization.
This display receives serial data directly from an Arbiter master clock that monitors line frequency and time derived from GPS satellites. While the master clock itself provides highly detailed information, its onboard screen is typically too small for practical viewing in control rooms, power generation facilities, or industrial environments. The DC-406-VLFD solves this limitation by presenting the same data in a large, high-visibility format that updates in real time and remains synchronized with the master clock output.
Using standard RS-232 serial input from the Arbiter clock, the DC-406-VLFD can be installed as the first display in a system chain. From_toggle—this display then retransmits the data via RS-485, allowing the signal to be carried long distances and shared across multiple displays. Displays can be daisy-chained indefinitely, enabling the same data to be viewed in multiple rooms, buildings, or even across geographically distant locations while maintaining timing integrity.
Configuration is handled through onboard DIP switches, allowing the display to be set to specific Arbiter application modes without requiring different part numbers for each function. This flexibility allows one display model to support multiple monitoring needs simply by changing the selected mode.
Key display modes supported include:
- Out-of-lock status monitoring to indicate GPS synchronization health
- Frequency deviation from nominal line frequency, such as deviation from 60 Hz
- Time deviation showing offset from UTC
- UTC time display synchronized directly to the master clock
- System time calculated as UTC plus or minus deviation
- System frequency for real-time power monitoring
- System phase and amplitude measurements
- Julian date for time-reference applications
If a selected data mode is not available or the serial string is interrupted, the DC-406-VLFD automatically displays blank characters. This provides a clear visual indication that the data source should be checked, typically by verifying that the Arbiter clock is configured to output the correct serial format, such as the Vorne standard output required for these display addresses. While this model is optimized for that serial string, custom manufacturing is available to support other Arbiter output formats as needed.
The DC-406-VLFD is designed as a direct, one-to-one replacement for aging large-format displays already installed in many facilities, making upgrades straightforward without requiring system redesign. Input and output configurations are flexible, allowing displays to be swapped or repositioned within a chain without dependency on installation order.
This display platform is available in multiple digit sizes to accommodate different viewing distances and environments. Options range from smaller digit formats for compact rooms to large indoor or outdoor displays capable of being read from extreme distances, ensuring the system can be tailored to virtually any operational requirement.
Common applications include:
- Power generation and distribution facilities
- Frequency and phase monitoring environments
- Control rooms and monitoring centers
- Industrial and utility infrastructure
- Facilities requiring long-distance, synchronized time and frequency visibility
The DC-406-VLFD Serial Data Transmission Controlled Display provides a scalable, reliable, and highly configurable solution for making critical Arbiter clock data visible wherever it is needed, without sacrificing accuracy, synchronization, or system flexibility.
